I have always believed that Kishtwar holds some of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth — landscapes that the world hasn’t fully discovered yet. My visit to Sinthan Top only deepened that belief. Standing at 12,500 feet, I felt what I can only describe as being at the top of the world — light, detached, and overwhelmed by the sheer beauty all around me.

What is Sinthan Top?
Sinthan Top is a spectacular mountain pass located in Kishtwar district, Jammu & Kashmir — sitting at a breathtaking height of 12,500 feet (3,800 metres) above sea level. It is one of the most beautiful and least-known passes in all of India, and a source of immense pride for Kishtwar.
The pass is situated on the Anantnag–Kokernag–Kishtwar section of National Highway 244 (NH 244), and connects the Kashmir Valley with the Jammu Province through Kishtwar district. Crucially, it is also the only road that connects the people of Warwan and Marwah valleys of Kishtwar with their district headquarters. The majority of the Sinthan Top area lies on the Kishtwar side.
Snow-capped for most of the year, with no permanent local population, Sinthan Top is a place where only shepherds, nomads, and adventurous travellers venture. The Bakarwal and Gujjar nomadic tribes regularly pass through here with their flocks in search of high-altitude summer pastures — a timeless sight that connects the present to centuries of mountain life.

The Journey from Kishtwar — Every Turn a New Wonder
The journey from Kishtwar to Sinthan Top is itself a remarkable experience. One of the most fascinating stops along the way is Aloo Farm — a delightful, enchanting place nestled between Kishtwar and the top, where the landscape begins its dramatic transformation. After Aloo Farm, as you proceed towards the Kashmir Valley side, the road begins to ascend steeply through zigzag turns and dense forest cover.
I remember the road winding higher and higher — each turn revealing a more spectacular view than the last. The forest gradually gives way to alpine pastures and open meadows, and then suddenly — there you are. At the top. At 12,500 feet, with the Himalayas spread out before you in every direction.

Standing at the Top — A Feeling Words Cannot Fully Capture
On reaching the top, one feels — as I felt — truly at the top of the world. There is a lightness to it, a freedom. The worldly worries that follow us everywhere simply fall away. The alpine pastures of Sinthan Top have a matchless natural beauty — unending slopes and plain meadows stretching to the foot of the summit, while the surrounding peaks rise in silent, majestic grandeur on all sides.
The cool and salubrious climate of the place has a genuinely refreshing, almost medicinal effect on the body and mind. The spot known as the ‘360 Degree View’ is extraordinary — from here you can see areas of both Kashmir and Jammu divisions simultaneously. It is one of the rare places on earth where two great geographical regions meet, visible to the naked eye from a single vantage point.
✍️ Pradeep Parihar’s Personal Note
“The view from Sinthan Top is not just charming — it is overwhelming. On one side, the green valleys and snow-touched peaks of Kishtwar stretch endlessly. On the other, the Kashmir valley reveals itself. I have seen many beautiful places in my travels across Kishtwar, but standing at Sinthan Top gave me a feeling I have never quite felt anywhere else. You must visit this place.”
