⚠ Important Safety Notice — 2026
A devastating cloudburst struck Chishoti village on 14 August 2025, tragically claiming so many lives. For 2026, the cloudburst-affected site at Chishoti has been declared a no-go zone — no pilgrim movement or establishment is permitted there. The BRO has been directed to construct a Bailey Bridge at Chishoti within a fortnight. Mandatory RFID registration (daily cap: 6,000), new Automatic Weather Stations, and enhanced landslide monitoring are now enforced. Register before you travel at shrimachailmatayatra.com.
Revival of the Organised Yatra (1987)
While Machail has been a locus of local devotion for centuries, the formal organised pilgrimage was revived in the late 20th century. Thakur Kulveer Singh of Bhaderwah is credited with formalising the yatra. After visiting the shrine in 1981, he initiated the Chhari procession tradition in 1987, transforming it into the large, well-organised pilgrimage it is today — drawing pilgrims from Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, and beyond.
The Chhari’s Sacred Journey — Stage by Stage 2026
In past, The Holy Chhari Procession : A mace (Chhari) of Goddess Chandi Mata was carried by devotees from village Chinote, Bhaderwah — home of Thakur Kulbir Singh Ji, its custodian. Under his auspicious guardianship, a grand procession sets out for Machail, with devotees singing bhajans amidst beating of drums, playing of flutes, and chanting of mantras.
Now, The Chhari of Maa Machail departs from Mahalaxmi Mandir, Jammu to the holy shrine at Machail.
Yatra Schedule & Key Dates 2026
The shrine is accessible from Baisakhi (14 April) onwards when Mata Ji returns to the Main Temple — Yatra Season Opens (shrine accessible from this date), with the grand 45-day formal Yatra running from late July through early September. All events, rituals, and dates are listed below.
- 18 Aug — Departure, Jammu

The Trek — A Journey Through Nature’s Cathedral
The entire trail from Atholi to Machail is a journey through one of the most magnificent natural landscapes in all of India. The area is landlocked on all sides by lush green forests of Deodar, Kail, Fir, Spruce, oaks, and Himalayan herbs — a salubrious, fragrant, green world that feels like a living cathedral built by nature for the goddess.
The Bhaga river is your constant companion along much of the route — sometimes flowing alongside you, sometimes charging ahead with roaring echoes and foaming, furious waves against perpendicular cliff faces. The rivers Chandra and Bhaga confluence at Atholi, and the proud Bhaga accompanies pilgrims for much of the journey to the shrine.
Along the way, you pass through and glimpse many remote villages — including Matti, Leondi, Hamiddran, Massu, Mao, Garh, and Ligree etc (population ~1,000, with hamlets of Doordo, Stangarhi, Thatak, Shahalee, Totee, Pondale, and Tunkhel), and many others. The entire belt is dotted with hot and cold springs — some perennial, some intermittent — considered sacred miracles of nature by the people of Paddar.
The serpentine trek path, though arduous, is lined with thousands of colourful Yatris from across India, with the chant of “Jai Mata Di, Jai Chandi Mata” echoing from every hillside — an extraordinary spectacle of living faith.
🥾 Trek
The traditional and most popular way. New road extension to Darshani Dwar near Machail Mata Shrines has reduced actual trekking to just half hour, making the Yatra accessible to far more pilgrims.
