DACHHAN BLOCK
“Lofty hills stand guard over Dachhan on all sides — snow-clad Brahma Peaks, Sickle Moon, and Arjuna beckon mountaineers, while the Mariv Sudir threads through a valley that is geographically a world apart, a separate entity, beautiful and self-contained.”

Introduction to Dachhan Block
Dachhan Block is one of the thirteen Community Development (CD) Blocks of District Kishtwar in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Located in the northern part of District Kishtwar within the picturesque Dachhan Valley, the block is an important administrative and developmental unit under the Panchayati Raj system. It plays a significant role in rural governance, implementation of government welfare schemes, and socio-economic development of its villages.
Renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, dense forests, alpine meadows, and rich cultural heritage, Block Dachhan represents one of the most scenic and ecologically significant rural regions of District Kishtwar. The block encompasses five revenue villages — Chicha (Dachhan), Loharana, Janakpur, Lopara, and Sounder — and functions as the base camp for internationally renowned mountaineering expeditions to the Brahma Massif and other world-class peaks.
📌 Did You Know?
Dachhan is the base camp for internationally renowned treks and mountaineering expeditions to the world-famous Brahma Massif (6,416 m & 6,110 m), Flat Top, Sickle Moon (6,775 m — the only peak in the range not yet fully scaled), Crooked Finger / Thunthur (5,710 m), and Arjuna Peak (6,200 m). Sounder — the gateway village to Dachhan — is situated within Kishtwar National Park and serves as the starting point of the famous Hudh Mata Yatra, which begins from the Radha Krishna Temple here every July.
Dachhan also branches out into three celebrated nalas — Nanth Nalla, Kiber Nalla, and Kiyar Nalla — all draining into the Mariv Sudir river. Mathralla is described as the most beautiful spot in Dachhan, with natural springs and a legendary rock statue of a cow from whose feet water flows.
Geographical Location & Setting
Dachhan Block is situated in the northern region of District Kishtwar, approximately 24 km north of Kishtwar town (52 km total distance — 32 km by road and 20 km on foot). The tract from Ikhala to Hanzal is known as Dachhan.
It is a landlocked area, quite independent of either Marwah or Kishtwar, though it was historically a pargana of Kishtwar Tehsil. On the upgradation of Marwah as a tehsil in 2005, Dachhan was given the status of Niabat under Marwah Tehsil.
ℹ️ Key Location Facts
Gateway (Kishtwar side): Ikhala |
Gateway (Marwah side): Hanzal |
Area: 100.50 sq km |
Revenue Villages: 5 (Chicha, Loharana, Janakpur, Lopara, Sounder) |
Principal Village: Panjdhara (on left bank of Mariv Sudir) |
Local Language: Kashmiri & Urdu
Panjdhara, the chief village of Dachhan, is situated on the left bank of the Mariv Sudir River, which bisects the valley into two halves with the better part of the population on the left side. The bridal path from Ikhala to Sounder — a distance of about 15 km — passes through dense, unbroken forest without any habitation except at Pinjari village.
Likewise, from Lopara to Hanzal, another 15 km tract is covered by forests without any habitation. This makes Dachhan geographically unique: neither linked to Kishtwar nor to Marwah, but a separate entity in the inner Himalayas.
⛰️ Dachhan’s Three Sacred Nalas
Nanth Nalla
Rich in alpine flora and fauna; one of the key drainage nalas feeding the Mariv Sudir — forms part of the Kishtwar National Park catchment
Kiber Nalla
Gateway to the Brahma Peaks base camp (6,416 m & 6,110 m); route for expedition teams heading to the internationally famed Brahma Massif
Kiyar Nalla
One of three main Kishtwar National Park catchment nalas; renowned among trekkers for untouched biodiversity and scenic grandeur
Tourism, Mountaineering & Natural Attractions
The Kishtwar–Dachhan–Marwah–Margan Top–Anantnag tourist circuit is one of the most celebrated in all of India, abounding in matchless natural beauty, forests rich in flora and fauna, meadows and pastures, and places of interest for adventurers, mountaineers, film makers, rock climbers, and sportsmen. This circuit attracted hundreds of trekkers during the early 1970s when the Youth Hostel Association of India organised trekking on it by making Kishtwar the base camp.
Sounder — the gateway village of Dachhan, situated 20 km from Ikhala within the Kishtwar National Park — is one of the most beautiful spots in the entire valley. The J&K PWD, Wildlife and Forest Departments have constructed rest houses here where tourists are provided boarding and lodging facilities. Sounder also serves as the base camp for mountaineering expeditions to the Brahma Peaks via Kiber Nalla.
Mathralla is celebrated as the most beautiful spot in Dachhan, with natural springs and a renowned rock statue of a cow from whose feet water flows — a sight of deep spiritual and natural significance that draws visitors from across the region. A trek of 30 km from Sounder along the bank of the Mariv Sudir river leads to Marwah — an exhilarating journey where natural beauty is at its peak throughout.

Infrastructure & Connectivity
Regular bus services ply between Kishtwar and Tangdoor only. Dachhan remains one of the remotest areas of District Kishtwar yet to be connected by a motorable road throughout. Road improvement remains the single most critical developmental priority. A distance of 50 km by foot from the bus stand at Kishtwar to Panjdhara underscores the connectivity challenge that faces the valley’s communities daily.
🎓 Education
Government Primary, Middle, High and Higher Secondary Schools; Anganwadi Centres — steadily improving literacy and enrolment across the valley’s settlements.
🏥 Healthcare
PHCs, Health Sub-Centres, immunisation and maternal & child healthcare — geographical remoteness remains a challenge; government helicopter evacuation for critical medical emergencies.
🛣️ Connectivity
Ikhala (gateway from Kishtwar side); Hanzal (gateway from Marwah side); bridal path via Pinjrari; forest rest houses at Ikhala and Sounder. Road extension to Sounder is a longstanding priority demand.
Development Potential & Future Prospects
- Extension of motorable road from Tangdoor to Sounder (Dachhan gateway) — the single most transformative infrastructure project for the valley
- Development of internationally recognised Brahma Peaks mountaineering base camp at Sounder/Kiber Nalla as a world-class adventure tourism product
- Mathralla natural springs and rock statue as a spiritual and eco-tourism destination within the Kishtwar National Park circuit
- Organised trout fishing and angling tourism on the Mariv Sudir and its nalas
- Promotion of Hudh Mata Yatra as a pilgrimage and heritage tourism event attracting regional visitors to Sounder every July
- Horticultural expansion — walnuts, apples, apricots — with farmer training and market linkage support
- Expansion of Kishtwar National Park ecotourism leveraging Dachhan’s location within the 2,190 sq km park area
- Aquatic sports potential — water rafting, kayaking on the Mariv Sudir — noted by the District Administration
